New Opening Tool

ARCHICAD 23 introduces the Opening tool for the modeling, information management and documentation of Openings. Use the new Opening tool to create holes and recesses/niches that penetrate any number of model elements.

Openings are must-have BIM elements, relevant for the architect, structural engineer and M&E engineer alike. In fact, Openings in load-bearing structures are the most commonly exchanged data type among these disciplines.

ARCHICAD 23 offers a robust framework for the management of intelligent Openings, and their geometry parameters and additional properties. With the Provision for Voids workflow, the design disciplines can easily synchronize their BIM Opening databases. ARCHICAD 23 uses a new-generation technology to generate symbolic 2D display of structural elements together with their Openings in a way that is consistent with global display standards.

A typical BIM model uses two types of Openings: architectural and engineering.

Engineering Openings are created in building structures to accommodate system components (e.g. ducts and pipes). These Openings are typically specified and placed by the M&E engineer, but must be approved by the architect and structural engineer. With the Opening tool, an ARCHICAD user can place engineering Openings in the BIM model.

Architectural Openings usually include a door/window, or are empty Openings with accessories. These Openings are typically specified and placed by the architect, but must be approved by the structural engineer. In ARCHICAD 23, such architectural openings are still created with Door, Window and Skylight tools (not the new Opening tool).
