Did you know that you can predefine different navigation options for your BIMx model? By placing camera views into the ARCHICAD project you can add movies to help your client explore the BIMx model. It is also possible to limit the navigation only to these videos/camera views. This article will guide you through this process step-by-step.
1. Add cameras to the ARCHICAD model
Choose the Camera Tool from the Toolbox and place cameras on the Floor Plan view to the points from where you would like to show your building. The first click defines the position of the camera and the second click sets the direction where the camera looks. You can tweak the view settings further by changing the parameters in the Camera Settings palette.
By placing the second Camera, ARCHICAD automatically defines a camera path for you connecting the placed cameras. This path can be continued with adding further cameras.
Once you are finished with your camera path you can define a new path (or new separate camera view) by clicking the New button on the Camera Settings palette.
2. Save the Camera path as a View
To save the Camera path as a view simply drag & drop it in the organiser from the left to the right between the Project Map and View Map.
For BIMx Hyper-models
Just like placing the 2D sheets and the 3D views, place the Camera path, or multiple Camera paths into your BIMx publisher set. When selecting a Camera path in the publisher set you can control its settings by clicking on the Options… button:
In the BIMx Export Options / Gallery options there are two possibilities to choose from:
- Add cameras as separate gallery items (each camera in the camera path can be opened separately and there won’t be any connection between them)
- Create a single movie for the gallery (The camera will go through the path with the set speed and frame rate and display it as a movie.)
Limit navigation to gallery items: when this checkbox is ticked, free navigation in the BIMx model is not available, only the saved camera views/camera paths can be checked.
For BIMx 3D only models
When the Camera path is ready, go to File > Save as… and choose the BIMx file format. In the appearing dialog you can choose from the same options as with the BIMx-Hyper model. In this dialog ARCHICAD also defines that which Camera path you are going to export as here you can export only one.
Note: As of ARCHICAD 20 saving as .bimx file is not possible any more. For details please see the related article: Where are the BIMx Export Options in ARCHICAD 20?
4. Check the camera views in BIMx
After the model is exported, you just need to open it in BIMx Desktop Viewer or send it to an iOS or Android device.
BIMx Desktop Viewer
In BIMx Desktop Viewer you have further options to set for the camera. In the Gallery menu you can choose to:
- Play on start (after saving the BIMx file, next time it is opened the movie will play as long as you don’t interrupt it)
- Play on idle (the movie will start playing whenever there is no interaction in the BIMx model)
- Limit navigation to gallery views (just like in ARCHICAD, this option can be turned on an off)
- Add new camera views/delete cameras
BIMx and BIMx PRO for iOS
After opening the BIMx model on your iOS device, open the camera set you saved with the publisher set. The Camera views can be found in the Favorites menu. Depending on the chosen export option you can either have separate gallery items or a video to display here.
BIMx for Android
After opening the BIMx model on your Android device, open the camera set you saved with the publisher set. The Camera views can be found in the Favorites menu. Depending on the chosen export option you can either have separate gallery items or a video to display here.
