Archicad freezes for several seconds on macOS 10.13 High Sierra and macOS 10.14 Mojave

Affected version(s): Archicad 19, 20, 21 and 22 | Severity: workaround applicable | ID: 237195

Issue
After the installation of macOS 10.13 High Sierra or macOS 10.14 Mojave, a user may experience an unexpected delay while creating a simple element, for example a wall. Drawing a wall might take up to 5-60 seconds to finish. Users may experience performance drop with Teamwork operations as well such as Send, Receive, Share or Join.

Cause
Archicad runs over the GRAPHISOFT folder when cache files are created. This results in a slow process because the folder structure contains old data-set that has been converted from HFS+ to APFS.

Workaround
  1. Make sure that all of your projects are saved/all of the changes are sent and received in Teamwork projects.
  2. In Teamwork projects it is advised to Leave Teamwork Project before applying any changes.
  3. Close Archicad then rename the /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/GRAPHISOFT  folder (e.g.: _GRAPHISOFT)
  4. It is safer to rename it first because it contains previously created autosaves, local cache, DXF-DWG Translator, IFC Schemes that might be important for a user
  5. Reopen Archicad and check the result of the workaround above.
  6. If the slow performance issue is no longer occurring, the user can copy the important data (e.g.: autosaves, local cache, DXF-DWG Translator, IFC Schemes) if needed from the previously renamed folder to the new GRAPHISOFT (/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/) folder. The originally renamed folder now can be deleted.
  7. If the Autosave folder is stored in different location determine by looking in the Work Environment (Data Safety & Integrity). Rename it first then handle it as mentioned above. It is recommended to use the Default Location.

If the workaround mentioned above doesn't help, try the following:
  1. Make sure that all of your projects are saved/all of the changes are sent and received in Teamwork projects.
  2. In Teamwork projects it is advised to Leave Teamwork Project before applying any changes and close all the Archicad instances
  3. Create a new or format an existing partition to HFS+ (OS X Extended - Journaled) - Partition size: ~ 20 Gb or more -
  4. Open Archicad and in the Work Environment redirect the following paths to the HFS+ partition: - Data Safety (Saving to Recovery File) - Special Folders (Temporary Folder, Cache Folder, Template Folder)
  5. Close and restart Archicad to enable the modifications
To extend the solutions mentioned above, please check the following:
  1. Check if the project contains any External Content as a Hotlink (Hotlink Manager)
  2. If YES, check the Hotlink files placed in the Host file if it has objects in the Embedded Library
  3. If YES, then use the Library Manager to export the Embedded Library items and add as a Linked Library in the Host file.

Export Embedded Library

Add Embedded Library as Linked Library in the Host file

Additionally, it might be worth updating the operating system to the latest build, because several macOS related issues have been fixed since macOS 10.13.
